Make a Difference Day: Give bikes to help the homeless

The Fort Collins Coloradoan wants to make a difference in the lives of our community's most vulnerable this Make a Difference Day by providing up to 50 bikes to the city's homeless and formerly homeless population.

Transportation can be a huge issue for the homeless community in Fort Collins. Many do not have cars. Relying solely on the bus system can be a challenge when trying to make it to appointments or a job on time.

Bicycles give individuals "independence and flexibility," said Kim Iwanski, spokeswoman for Fort Collins Housing Authority.

Fort Collins Rescue Mission said bikes, coupled with public transportation, are the main mode of transportation for their clientele.

To help alleviate some of these issues, the Coloradoan is asking the community to donate gently used adult bikes to help those in need. Bikes will be tuned up prior to donation and will be donated to four area agencies for distribution: Catholic Charities, Fort Collins Rescue Mission, Redtail Ponds and the Sister Mary Alice Murphy for Hope.

Here's a look at our recipient agencies and how they plan to use your donations to make a difference.

Catholic Charities also provides free lunches to the community and a variety of other services to help those in need.

HOW THEY WILL USE THE BIKES: Catholic Charities plans to use the bicycles donated on Make a Difference Day to give replacement bicycles to homeless clients who have lost their bikes or had them stolen.
