Police tape surrounds the area where a Fort Collins police shooting occurred early Sunday morning at America's Best Value Inn, 1809 N. College Ave.

The man fatally shot by a Fort Collins Police Services officer on Sunday has been identified as George Randall Newman, according to the Larimer County Coroner's Office.

The coroner's office determined the 26-year-old Fort Collins man died of two gunshot wounds. The shooting happened at Americas Best Value Inn in north Fort Collins.

An obituary for Newman states that he was born in Franklin, Indiana, and worked in construction as a laborer.

Police reportedly received a call at 4:50 a.m. on Sunday about a disturbance at 1809 N. College Ave., where the caller said he heard a loud noise and then saw a hole appear in the ceiling above him at the motel.

According to investigators, officers responded and tried to make contact with the suspect. The man opened the door wielding a firearm, and an officer shot him, investigators said.

No other injuries were reported in the incident. The officer who fired his weapon has not yet been identified.

As is protocol, the multi-agency team that investigates police shootings — the Eighth Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team — is investigating the shooting, with the Loveland Police Department taking the lead.

Larimer County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer David Moore previously told the Coloradoan that the incident was captured on a body-mounted camera, but the video won't be publicly released until the investigation and reviews are complete.

This is the fifth police shooting in Larimer County this year. In both 2015 and 2016, there were three police shootings.
