Authorities ID man killed while chasing dog on I-25

Authorities have identified the man who was struck and killed by a semi truck on Interstate 25 as 39-year-old Jason Schaefer of Las Vegas.

Schaefer died Sunday after chasing a dog on I-25 south of Harmony Road, according to Colorado State Patrol. He died of multiple blunt force injuries, and his death was accidental, the Larimer County Coroner's Office announced Monday afternoon.

Schaefer was riding in a Toyota pickup with a female driver when the two had a dispute, according to the state patrol. The woman reportedly pulled over on northbound I-25 about 5:30 p.m. 

While the vehicle was pulled over, a dog jumped from the car. Schaefer, trying to retrieve the dog, chased it into traffic. A Walmart semi struck and killed both him and the dog. 

The semi driver, a 69-year-old Pueblo man, wasn't injured. 

The driver of the Toyota, a 37-year-old woman from Nevada, was transported to the hospital, according to the state patrol. Her name hasn't been released.

Initial reports indicated Schaefer was from Tennessee because he had a Tennessee driver's license, but he lived in Las Vegas, according to the coroner's office.

The crash prompted a shutdown of northbound I-25.
