Undocumented Colorado State students rally on campus

Rallies and protests stemming from last week's presidential election continued Monday, with hundreds of Colorado State University students turning out to support their peers who are undocumented immigrants.

The rally, held at noon on the campus plaza, dispersed by about 1:30 p.m., with a souvenir: A swath of butcher paper inscribed with dozens of messages of support.

Rally organizer Brithany Gutierrez, a sophomore, said planning for the rally started about two weeks ago, as a response to a "free speech wall" constructed on campus by Donald Trump supporters in early October. One of Trump's campaign promises has been to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border as a means to curtail illegal immigration.

Gutierrez said she felt "disheartened" when she saw the anti-immigrant symbol pop up on campus. The rally wasn't directly in response to Trump winning the presidential election, but that added fuel to it, she said.

Gutierrez said she and the other 100-plus students who are undocumented immigrants wanted their peers to know they exist, take the same classes and pass each other on campus.

"We're undocumented and we're unafraid and we're here to stay," she said.
