A Colorado Department of Transportation employee helped avoid a potential tragedy Friday on Interstate 25 just south of Mulberry Street.

Michael Lang, a motorist safety worker, saw a man in a motorized wheelchair along the shoulder of the right northbound lane as rush-hour traffic whizzed by.

"I needed to get him safe, so I pulled over and helped him out as best I could,'' Lang said. "He was a little disoriented and needed some help. That's what I'm out here for is to help.''

Lang called law enforcement and an ambulance and the unharmed man warmed up inside the cab of Lang's pickup until Colorado State Patrol and an ambulance arrived.

The man told a Colorado State Patrol trooper he started in Old Town and was heading to Poudre Valley Hospital. It was unknown what route the man took between Old Town and I-25 but PVH is several miles west of the interstate.

The man was transported by ambulance to PVH.
