A bicyclist has died near Carter Lake after being struck by a vehicle.Tuesday evening.

Jason Holden, 43, of Berthoud died at the scene around 7:20 p.m. along Larimer County Road 8E near the entrance to the Berthoud water treatment plant.

According to a Colorado State Patrol release Wednesday morning, an unknown white sedan or small SUV was eastbound on County Road 8E passing a bicyclist who was also eastbound. It is believed the vehicle may have made contact with the bicycle while passing, causing the rider of the bicycle to lose control and fall into the roadway. After falling off of the bicycle, the rider tumbled into the westbound lane of County Road 8E and was struck by a westbound 1994 Chevy pickup.

The driver of the pickup, 49-year-old Robert Conde of Loveland, was uninjured and remained on scene following the collision.

CSP is asking the public's help in locating the white sedan or SUV and its driver for further questioning by calling 303-239-4501.

The death is the latest in a string of fatalities on Larimer County roads over the past couple of weeks that increased the total this year to 37. By this time last year, 31 people had died, according to records maintained by the Coloradoan and the Larimer County Coroner's office. Twenty-four people died in both 2014 and 2013, 26 died in 2012, and 20 died in 2011.

Tuesday marked the first fatal crash involving a bike and moving vehicle this year in the county. A bicyclist in Fort Collins struck a parked car and died earlier this year.
