Police identify Fort Collins man shot by officer

Authorities have identified the man shot by police outside of Poudre Valley Hospital as 53-year-old Richard Ivey of Fort Collins.

Shortly before 5 a.m. Thursday, Fort Collins police received a call about a man with a knife in the emergency room parking lot at Poudre Valley Hospital. When authorities arrived, the man confronted police, and an officer shot him, authorities said Thursday.

Ivey remained hospitalized on Friday afternoon in critical condition at Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, a hospital spokeswoman confirmed. Police and hospital staff have been unable to contact the man's family or friends, and anyone with knowledge of their whereabouts is urged to call Detective Tessa Jakobsson at (970) 221-6575.

Ivey does not appear to have a recent criminal history. The most recent Larimer County court case involving Ivey dates back to a 2000 misdemeanor assault case, records show.

The officer who shot Ivey was identified as Mathew Brough, who joined Fort Collins Police Services in January 2011. He remains on paid administrative leave, as is standard protocol when officers are involved in shootings.

Nobody else was injured during the incident, and there was no ongoing danger to the public, police said. An investigation is ongoing.

The last officer-involved shooting in Fort Collins happened nine months ago when a man motioned a gun to his head and then pointed it at officers. Police fired three shots to subdue the man, who was booked into the Larimer County jail on suspicion of felony menacing. That charge was dismissed, but the man pleaded guilty to a lesser weapons charge in November.

Officers in that case were deemed justified for their actions, the district attorney's office determined.
