UPDATE: 1 dead, 1 critical in Fort Collins stabbing; 2 suspects ID'd

**********UPDATE 4 p.m.: The Coloradoan has confirmed through police and public records that 26-year-old Sara Mondragon was the second person stabbed Tuesday night at 1623 Stover Street. She is currently listed in critical condition at Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland.

UPDATE 3:50 p.m.:

Fort Collins police said the 1600 block of Stover Street will remained closed until overnight Wednesday into Thursday as the investigation remains ongoing.

UPDATE: 3:30 p.m.: Kathy J. Mondragon, 61, has been identified as the woman who was killed in Tuesday night's stabbing in Fort Collins. The Larimer County Coroner's Office conducted an autopsy on Wednesday and determined she suffered multiple stab wounds to the head and neck.

UPDATE 1:30 p.m.: Fort Collins police have arrested a second suspect in connection with the reported stabbing. Tomas Vigil, 42, was arrested on suspicion of first degree homicide and attempted first degree homicide.

UPDATE 12 p.m.: Fort Collins police have publicly confirmed one of the women who was stabbed Tuesday night has died and the other woman is being treated for multiple stab wounds.

Additionally, police confirmed to the Coloradoan that Tolentino Corzo-Avendano, 26, is the man who was arrested and is accused for first-degree homicide and attempted first-degree homicide.

Emergency crews responded at 11:56 p.m. Tuesday to a duplex at 1623 Stover Street on reports of a stabbing. Police have not yet publicly identified the women.

The FCPS SWAT team apprehended the suspect, Corzo-Avendano, about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at a residence near the intersection of Prospect Road and Riverside Avenue. The man exited the building and surrendered after police deployed a diversionary device.

The investigation is ongoing, and it remains unclear what prompted the altercation.

UPDATE: 10:30 a.m.: Detectives and a host of officers with Fort Collins police are continuing their investigation into a late-night stabbing. Neither identifying information about the man arrested nor details about the two women who were stabbed have been made publicly available. The extent of their injuries is also being withheld pending notification of family, police said.

Stover Street is expected to remain closed in the area throughout the day while forensics units and investigators work inside the duplex. About 1 mile to the east, SWAT personnel left the cul de sac about 9:30 a.m., and the scene was transitioning to detectives. .

Fort Collins police say new information will be released through the day.

UPDATE: 9:00 a.m.: Police spokesperson Kate Kimble confirmed that one suspect from the earlier stabbing incident is in custody. According to Kimble, there are no other suspects being sought at this time.

UPDATE: 8:45 a.m.: Police in armored vehicles are searching an apartment complex on Riverside near Edora Park, calling for a suspect to come out. Fort Collins Police Department confirmed SWAT presence and said that Prospect and Riverside roads would be closed for public safety. Police also confirmed that the SWAT team is using Flash Sound Diversionary Devices in the area to attempt contact with the occupants of said apartment. It is has not been confirmed by police whether this is related the stabbing incident that occurred near Stover and Prospect early Wednesday morning.

UPDATE 5 a.m.: Police continued to investigate a Tuesday night stabbing that happened in a Midtown Fort Collins duplex and sent two women to Medical Center of the Rockies.

Few details about the extent of injuries, a motive or suspect description have been made publicly available. New information is expected to be released through the morning, Sgt. Dean Cunningham said.

As of 5 a.m., nobody was in custody, Cunningham said.

An interagency command post has been established across the street from the duplex in question in the 1600 block of Stover Street. Investigators arrived at scene through the morning, and crime scene tape blocked off a swath of the area between Prospect Road and Parker Street.

Sgt. Dean Cunningham said the police activity should not disrupt nearby school activities. All schools in the area opened as scheduled Wednesday morning.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Fort Collins police are investigating a reported stabbing that sent two people to the hospital and left police searching for a suspect early Wednesday morning.

Police and emergency medical personnel were dispatched shortly before midnight to a residence in the 1600 block of Stover Street on a report of a stabbing that happened, Sgt. Dean Cunningham said. Two people were treated and transported to Medical Center of the Rockies, but additional information about the severity of their injuries is unclear.

Details early Wednesday are sparse. As of 1:30 a.m., nobody was in police custody for the incident, Cunningham said.

“The investigation is still very much active,” Cunningham said.

Additional details were not immediately available.
