A look back: Fort Collins' bike history

1980: Fort Collins hosted a week of bicycle racing and events known as Tour de Fort Week in 1980. The event featured races around the CSU oval and tours around Fort Collins and parts of surrounding Larimer County

1980: A bike racer participates in Tour de Fort cycling race near in Fort Collins.

1981: Bikers ride a ten person bicycle in Fort Collins. The bike was built by Bill Swets, owner of Swetsville Zoo metal sculpture park.

1982: Bike shop owner Chuck Wanner holds a pro racing bike at Bike Broker Inc, a former bike shop on Mountain Ave., Fort Collins in 1982.

1982: A Fort Collins High School student makes his way to band practice on a rather unusual bicycle he bought from a neighbor. Attached to the bottom of the bike is his saxaphone.

1984: Fort Collins Police investigate a bicycle-car collision at the intersection of Lemay Ave. and Stuart St, Fort Collins, in 1984.

1988: Heavy weekend traffic on South College Avenue is stopped at the light at Johnson Drive, giving Mark Sears and his children, 2-year-old Oliver and 5-year-old Alison, a chance to cross the street on Feb. 1, 1988

1988: A CSU student rides his unicycle on the way to the Lory Student Center on the unversity's campus.

1990: Seven members of Team Merkin of Fort Collins break away from the Ride The Rockies Bike Tour on U.S. Highway 34 west of Loveland on Jan. 22, 1990.

1992: Bicyclists ride north on Mason Street during the first-ever Brrrrrr Ride on Jan. 2, 1992.

1992: A group of cyclists ride along the frontage road of I-25, north of Fort Collins, in 1992. During the time period, local riders were claiming that state patrol officers were going out of their way to issue cyclists traffic citations for not following the rules of the road.

1993: Cyclists ride through Rocky Mountain National Park on the 1993 Ride The Rockies.

1994: A CSU police officer tickets a CSU student bicyclist for not dismounting in the dismount zone near on the CSU campus. Police started strictly enforcing the bicycling traffic rules that semester, sparked by complaints about safety

2000: Henry Horrocks of Loveland balances a beer while riding his 1967 Schwinn Cruiser through a series of kegs during the Tour de Fat at the New Belgium Brewery Saturday October 21, 2000. The brewery's first Tour de Fat was held in 2000, and is now going on its twelfth year

2009: Friends of Josh Carnes, not pictured, use a septacycle to move his 1995 Toyota 4Runner to his new house at 1212 Newsom in Fort Collins Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009. About 25 people helped Carnes to move using nothing but bicycles

2011: The three-day Fort Collins Cycling Festival concluded with the Rist Canyon Road Race, a 66.8-mile ride that winds through Rist Canyon and starts and ends in Old Town Fort Collins.
