The Windsor High School girls tennis team made history in Day 1 of the 4A State Championships at Pueblo City Park Thursday.

At No. 3 singles, German foreign exchange student Sarah Engelhardt became the first Windsor girls tennis player to win a match at the state tournament.

Engelhardt beat Steamboat Springs' Maddie Labor 6-4, 7-5 before losing to Valor Christian's Meghan McDuff 6-2, 6-2. Engelhardt didn't get an opportunity at a playback because Valor's McDuff lost Friday morning.

Windsor's other state entry, Amanda Ward, is out of the tournament after a 6-3, 6-2 loss Thursday to Mullen's Emma Shilling at No. 1 singles.

GIRLS GOLF

4A REGIONAL — The Wizards finished sixth as a team and failed to qualify a golfer for the 4A state tournament.

Broomfield won the regional, shooting a 259 Wednesday at the Olde Course in Loveland. Windsor shot 305. The Wizards' best score came from Lauren Gustafson, who carded a 100, finishing 18th. The top 14 golfers qualified for state, with 94 being the stroke cut-off.

Resurrection Christian finished 11th, shooting a 384. The Cougars' best golfer was Rachel Rost, who carded a 117.

LACROSSE

THOMPSON VALLEY 14, WINDSOR 5 — The Wizards (7-9) were down only a goal at halftime, but were outscored 5-0 in the third quarter as No. 7 Thompson Valley (12-4) pulled away from No. 10 Windsor.

Windsor went down 3-0 midway through the second quarter. The Wizards then started the comeback on a goal from Austin Lind. KC Scott then cut the Windsor deficit to 4-2. Then in the dying seconds of the half Scott fired a goal from about 40 yards out to send the Wizards into the locker room with momentum.

The momentum didn't carry through halftime. Johnny Parsons and Kale Wilson each scored twice in the third quarter for Thompson Valley as the Eagles took control with five unanswered goals in the third to eliminate Windsor in the first round.

GIRLS SOCCER

WINDSOR 2, PALISADE 1 — No. 15 Windsor beat No. 18 Palisade in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs. The game began Wednesday night but finished Thursday morning after two lightning delays forced postponement.

The Wizards (14-2) were up 2-0 Wednesday on a fifth-minute goal from Bailey Zehr and 15th-minute goal from Kelsey Steffens. Shortly thereafter, the teams sat through a 30-minute lightning delay. Play resumed for a while, but with 33 minutes left in the second half, there was another lightning delay and ultimately the decision was made to postpone until 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

Palisade (11-5) cut the deficit to 2-1 Thursday on a goal from Audrey Rose Kachin with 13 minutes left in the game, but Windsor held on for the win. Windsor advanced to take on No. 2 Broomfield Saturday. For results visit WindsorBeacon.com.
