Police search for driver who hit pedestrian, fled scene

Police on Friday continued to search for a driver involved in a hit-and-run crash that seriously injured a 32-year-old Fort Collins man Thursday evening near Colorado State University.

Fort Collins emergency crews were called shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday to the intersection of West Elizabeth Street and Constitution Avenue on a report of a pedestrian who had been struck by a motorist, police said in a news release. The pedestrian, Stanley Brooks, was attempting to cross Constitution from west to east on the north side of the intersection and was entering the crosswalk with another pedestrian when he was struck by the vehicle.

The driver made no attempt to stop and help the injured man, police said.

Brooks was treated and transported to Medical Center of the Rockies with serious but not life-threatening injuries. On Friday afternoon, he was listed in "fair" condition at MCR, a hospital spokeswoman confirmed.

The vehicle, described as a dark red or maroon colored late-1990s or early-2000s sedan – possibly a Toyota or Honda – had previously stopped at a red light, witnesses told police. The driver appeared to be looking toward the east prior to turning right.

Additional information about the investigation was not made available Friday afternoon.

Anyone with information about the collision or possible suspect vehicle details is asked to contact officer David Kaes at (970) 221-6555.
