New Belgium to release gluten-free beers

Beer drinking and gluten intolerance don't normally go together, because beer is usually made from malted barley or malted wheat, both of which include gluten.

But New Belgium Brewing is hopping on the reduced-gluten train and will release a beer for gluten-sensitive drinkers in January.

The Glütiny Pale Ale and Glütiny Golden Ale beers are made with ale yeast and have 6 percent and 5.2 percent alcohol by volume, respectively.

According to the company's website, New Belgium tried brewing beer with grains such as rice, quinoa, millet and more without getting the same taste created by using malted barley or wheat. Instead, they used a method in which enzymes in the brewing process break down gluten into fragments so small that they are not "not capable of triggering a reaction in the gluten-sensitive population."

Both beers will have gluten levels less than 10 parts per million, according to New Belgium.
