Palermo, 57, died Saturday evening after he was struck by a Dodge Durango SUV in north Fort Collins earlier in the day. Fort Collins police are still investigating the crash and have not yet filed charges against the driver, 18-year-old Earl Ong of Fort Collins.

Emergency crews were dispatched shortly before 3 p.m. Saturday on a report of crash involving a vehicle and a bicyclist about one-quarter mile north of the intersection of Lemay Avenue and Vine Drive. Fort Collins police located a bicycle, a Dodge Durango SUV, and a Ford F-350 truck that was pulling a small boat.

After a lengthy investigation Saturday, police determined Ong was traveling north on Lemay. Ong realized he was about to hit the truck in front of him, swerve to the right, and crashed into the cyclist, investigators said.

The cyclist was traveling northbound in the bike lane.

Poudre Valley Hospital EMS treated and transported Palermo to Medical Center of the Rockies with life threatening injuries. He died later in the day of the blunt force injuries, the coroner's office said.

Neither alcohol nor distraction are suspected in the crash. However, police "are working to determine whether the driver fell asleep while driving," police said. An investigation is ongoing, and charges are pending.

Anyone with additional information about this crash is asked to call Officer Drew Jurkofsky at 970-416-2224.
