Colorado Day: Celebrate our state's 139th birthday

By Coloradoan staff

It was 139 years ago Aug. 1 that Colorado was granted statehood in these United States, and Colorado Day marks the occasion each year.

Colorful Colorado marks 139 years as a state on Aug. 1.

Here are some fun ways you can celebrate all the great things about living in the Centennial State:

Explore the state

Coloradoan reporter Stephen Meyers and photojournalist Erin Hull have been on a summerlong road trip across the state. Visit their eXplore Colorado page for amazing stories and photos, and dozens of ideas for adventure in every corner of Colorado.

Get outside

The abundance of outdoor opportunities is what brings many people the Colorado, and what better time to take advantage of our own backyard? Some ideas to get you out and about are below. Stuck at work all weekend? Don't worry, admission to state parks is free on Monday.

Get a drink

Beer is the alcoholic beverage of choice around here, but there's some fine wine country over on the Western Slope.

Get proud

There's a whole weekend's worth of events for this year's NoCo Pride.

Get to the fair

Get in touch with the past

Learn about our state's past at the History Colorado Center in Denver — admission is free on Saturday for Colorado Day. Or stay right where you are and read the following:

Get out of Colorado

Maybe all this talk about Colorado is reminding you that you haven't left the state in forever. Denver-based Frontier Airlines can help you get away with its Colorado Day sale: Fares to major destinations start as low as $39 one-way. But you have to book before midnight Friday!
